Our History

The Aurora Lions Club is a member of Lions Clubs International which is the world’s largest service club organization with over 1.4 million members in over 48,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas around the world.  Since 1917. Lions Clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service through our five global causes:  vision. hunger relief, diabetes, environment, and childhood cancer.

For several years, the Aurora Lions Club’s major focus has been to provide eye exams, eyeglasses, other vision aids and equipment with a primary focus on children.  It has provided funding for several charitable organizations and civic activities.  Annually for several decades, Lions have rung bells for the Salvation Army and contributed to their campaigns.  Over the last few years, several thousand dollars have been donated to the Interfaith and Marie Wilkinson Food Pantries.  Recently added activities are volunteering at Interfaith Food Pantry’s pet distribution and serving meals at Hesed House.

Funds have been raised through Candy Days, car raffles, and vacation trips.  Sales of pancakes, hot dogs, pizzas, sweet corn and ice cream have provided necessary funding for philanthropic activities.  One of the largest fundraising efforts began in 1953 with broom sales.  Thousands of brooms were sold door to door all over the city.  Since then, brooms continue to be sold at club activities and local events such as the Farmer’s Market.
